Just being ME

Please say hello ... I love comments!

22/12/2007

and the winner is ... stollen!

The results from my December Poll are in, twenty five votes were counted, and ten of you like Stollen the best, well I can add another vote, 'cos I do too! Does anyone know when Stollen became available in this country, I certainly don't remember seeing this on the Christmas tea table when I was young?

Seven of you like Yule Log the best, not that keen myself, I do find the chocolate buttercream a bit sickly, although I do always like the little plastic decorations spiked in the top, I have lots from year's back, saved in a little tin. Will I ever re-use them?

Four of you like Mince Pies the best, I like them too, and recently I have been eating rather too many, since discovering some great Sainsburys instore bakery shortcrust ones, which could easily pass as homemade if sprinkled with a little extra icing sugar! I shant tell if you don't?

Only two of you like Christmas Cake the best, not surprising this gets low votes. I never buy or bake a Christmas Cake, it just never gets eaten. I don't think it is because it isn't liked, but because of the fact that everyone always feels stuffed after that mound of turkey sandwiches, that there just isn't the room for it?

I am so pleased two of you 'hate all of them', one cake I forgot to suggest was Tunis Cake, would you eat this, or is this just something else left to go stale in the cake tin?

Hi Louise, oh dear, I missed out on your poll, but for the record my favourite is Christmas cake, but must have loads of marzipan and icing! Hope your Christmas is wonderful, see you in the New Year! p.s. I have a green tree now too, just posted about it today.

Hi Louise. I LOVE Stollen, I've already had a whole one to myself the other week when I was decorating. Two more hidden in a cupboard for this week! The Russian dolls were given to my daughters so not sure where they came from, think it might be Whittards (they're made by Lindt).

The snowballs are mints, so your crown would be safe!

Hmmm... I'm not sure I know what any of those are. Perhaps I will just have to make a trip to the UK at Christmas next year just to taste them all? Yes, I think that would be the best. I'll let my sweetie know we are going so he can start saving for the trip now. :D Any reason to travel!

Merry Christmas!

Love your little polls, Louise :-) I'm not really a dessert girl, but I do like buttercream frosting in very small doses. Merry Christmas to you :-)

I've never had stollen. I voted for mince pies. I LOVE mincemeat but it has to be the vegetarian kind - no suet for me! Most years I make my own mincemeat 6 weeks ahead of Christmas, then make mince pies, but this year I forgot! Woe is me! I was never that crazy about my mum's Christmas cake, the cake part was too dark and the royal icing was hard and too sweet. When I make fruit cake, I don't cover it in marzipan or anything, we just eat it as it is (as per the recipe on my blog recently) and we like it.
I don't know what Tunis cake is, but I remember Battenburg - do they still sell that over there? It's the one with a checkerboard effect inside, pink and yellow and undoubtedly full of artificial additives, then covered in marzipan.

Louise I Love the mince pies! My dear H. misses them since his mom passed away so I try to make some for him every Christmas..this year he will have to help..take over. I have strict orders NOT to do too much as I took a wee tumble with my crutches so they have been removed and so my wheelie and wheel chiar brought in :(
Have a Merry Christmas I shall post once before before the 25th.
The movie review is one you can rent from video store or purchase..your hubby would enjoy it! hugs NG xo

Hello Louise
I think I voted for Stollen..can't remember now!
I equally love rich Christmas cake and the smell of it is so evocative.
Cake generally goes down well with me!
I do love collecting the vintage chalkware decorations that sit on the cake.

P.s Yes Kim.. the Russian doll comes from Wittards.
I hope to buy one tomorrow if they have any left and resist the temptation to eat all the contents before Christmas.

I love them all except the yule log (not keen on buttercream) and my fave is christmas cake. I am not a fan of Tunis cake either but my in-laws always have one in (being Cornish they also have saffron cake and white cake - both yummy).
Hope you have a lovely Christmas

I've never had yule log or stollen ~ they are not as well known here.. but I love Christmas cake (without icing) also love fruit mince pies but I'm the only one in my family who does.. I usually make Christmas puddings but ran out of time this year so we are breaking tradition and having a cherry and almond tart. Being summer here the berries and cherries are at their peak and always go down well at Christmas!

Have a wonderful Christmas Louise, if I don't get back before then. Gxx

I love your polls! I was one of the ones who voted for mince pies. They're always just enough and make me feel all festive. What is tunis cake? I don't think I've ever tried it.

Have a great time tomorrow!
