rosy sponge cakes ...

I baked these rose-shaped sponge cakes using a 4oz mix, and a silicone mould.

Being somewhat influenced by the Hairy Bikers' Battenburg, I also added red dye to the mix to make them pink.

Slipped a bit, and then really wish I hadn't!

Being the first time I have ever used the silicone method, the whole procedure was a bit hit 'n miss to say the least.

I'm what you could say 'old school' and up until now I have always opted to use what I've always used, a baking tin!

Mixed reviews really.

The cakes came out of the cases well, but on tasting them the texture of the sponge was, well, reminiscent of rubber?

Not so springy to the touch, and still tempted to give preference to tin, but I guess there is room for both in my baking.

The mould came from Lidl, and being the girly-girl I am, was seduced by the pretty rose shapes!

They are very pretty. I'm an old fashioned baking tin girl too. I bought some silicone muffin cases and they are a real pain as my muffins won't come out of them properly, so I have to eat the evidence :)

hm, I make my red velvet cupcakes in silicon and they come out brilliantly, although I think that might be because you still have to put the cases in? Maybe when you cook directly onto silicon it's not so good?

Totally sold on the shape but think you're right on the taste. Maybe the recipe needs slight adjustment for silicone cooking.

You know what, I would have bought that silicone pan too...not that I need it with all the heart pans I have! Your rosy sponge cakes look lovely and delicious. I have a couple of silicone type loaf pans and the loaves do seem kind of rubbery feeling on the outside, but they taste OK. You could freeze ice in them ;)

They look really pretty - I love the shape. I must admit that despite having lots of silicone moulds when I want to guarantee that something will come out right I always reach for the baking tins.

Good old Lidl though - you have to love a bargain! x

They do look very pretty! We have a silicone bread 'tin' - my husband who makes the bread thinks it is great but I made a cake in it and even though I greased and floured it stuck in the base so I think I'll stick to proper cake tins:)

They look fantastic! I know what you mean about silicone. I had a gingerbread man shaped one and I just couldn't get on with it as they didn't come out properly so we had to eat them from the silicone!

These look so very pretty and sweet. I can't say that I have ever baked in silicone pans. I have made soap in them though and they come out fantastic.

They do look very pretty! I have tried the silicon a bit, but have always been mildly disappointed. I've never been sure if that was just my prejudice or something real. Maybe it's something real!
