my photo

bittersweet memories ...

The photo above taken in 1950, was in the belongings of a Great Aunt, who passed away this month at the age of 93.

From the left it shows her father John (who I knew as Gampy), and her mother Ethel (who I knew as Old Nan), who passed away many, many years ago.

From the right is my Nan Iris, who is no longer with us, and my Grandpa Eric, who at the age of 96 is alive and well, and lives in Mallorca.

The young girl in the middle (aged 10) is my lovely Mum, who sadly passed away this month back in 2002.

Old photos are bittersweet, a mixture of both pain and pleasure.

A wonderful photo Louise. They all look so happy out in the sunshine. A great snapshot in time. I wonder the reason the photo was taken on that day? x

They are a mixture of memories Louise but very precious, capturing a moment in time to keep forever. I'll be thinking of you missing your Mum this month particularly. If my Dad was still with us (he also died in 2002) he would have been 78 on 27th April, so I'll be having a look at my old photos and having a few smiles and tears too.

Old photos are magical. A snapshot of more than just people. A moment in time. I think about their clothes, what they would have been doing, their relationships, what their world would have lokked like, etc, etc. And then if I had known them all those emotions you are talking about come in to play. Magical!

I wish more people had written who was who on some of our family photo's!

But - yes, it is sad, and happy, and poinient, a real mix of emotions.

What a lovely photo to have found a wonderful snapshot in time - bittersweet memories indeed. My dear Mum would have been 94 on 29th of April - I was thinking of her whilst in Wales knowing how she would have loved being near the sea:)
