my photos

ever got the feeling you've been had ...

I went to the antiques and collectors fair at the South of England Showground at Ardingly today with my step-dad along with a few pennies in my purse. I ended up buying the plate above, and after investigating further in the Cornishware book by Paul Atterbury, it turns out to be a fake! I must admit I hadn't ever come across one of these plates before, and even though I only collect yellow Cornish, I bought this because I liked it, and knew it would look very nice with the colour scheme going on in my kitchen.

I am not too worried, as I say I bought it as I liked it, because of the Cornishware connection and because I like pixies. I paid £15 for it, which I think is a price you would likely pay for any 11 inch decorative plate. Maybe the stallholder didn't know, or perhaps he did, and was glad to move it on, to the first (mug) unsuspecting customer that came along, me!

Apparently the 1950s advertising plates which show a shield mark in green, are mega rare and there are only a handful in existence, the mark on mine is black. Look at the pixie's hat on my plate, it's white, the original hat would have been blue.

Talking of blue, I bought this lovely Bristol blue hyacinth vase, possibly Victorian, for £10! I do believe this to be an original, by the look of the base. If not, I have well and truly been had!

As long as you like the plate then it isn't a total loss, Louise!

The vase is such a pretty color blue!

The most important thing is that you like them, so I think you are the winner here!

You live and learn don't you! I'm sure that now you've seen the fake you can compare the glaze, colour and typefaces used and be able to spot the genuine article at a dozen paces next time!

The hyacinth vase is lovely - something to look forward to early next year! What colour flower will you choose, white or blue?

It is not very nice if the stall holder deliberately meant to mislead you but at least you know more about Cornishware now! The vase will look even lovelier with a hyacinth in it! Just to let you know also that I have updated my blog. I was getting withdrawal symptoms!

Real or not, the pixie plate is fab, I'd be pleased to have it on my wall!

It's still very cute - think of it as "Cornishware inspired" rather than a fake! :-)

You could always run a competition on your blog...and offer the plate as a prize ;-)

Is there such a thing as a rare fake? You may have one!

I like the plate. Maybe the stallholder didn't know but it's a real pain thinking that maybe they did! I had the same thing with a woman who sold me a doll on ebay and I later discovered she had dolls disease (the doll, not the woman) the woman is a doll collector so how did she not know? I felt a right fool.
The vase is so pretty.

I think the pixie plate is really cute, whatever it is! And I love that color blue that the vase is.

You got a really cute plate...the fact that its a reproduction doesn't change that. :)

And the blue vase is gorgeous!
Any flower looks amazing in a cobalt blue vase.

Unfortunately the blue and white and even yellow Cornish ware has been imitated so many times.. I shudder to think of the entire collection that my mother had in our Cornish rental cottage.. If only we had known how popular and collectable it was to become .. goodness knows what happened to it!
Despite the fact that your plate is a fake.. I think it is charming and so it that stunning bit of Bristol Blue. It will look fabulous with a white hyacinth in it..

Some you win and some you lose. A shame though, but as you like the plate anyway then you still come out on top. The blue vase is quite striking

You could always paint his little blue :D just kidding..sorry you were duped but it's still a cute plate and a lovely addition to your blue and white themed kitchen.
Your hyacinth vase is stunning.. I used to collect blue glass pieces..love to see the light shining through them on the windowsill.
My favourite piece is and old glass eyebath M dug up from his grandmothers house ruins (her house burnt to the ground in the '67 bushfires). I might post it soon..
Enjoy your weekend..bet you're in your patch right now! Gxx
