my photo

your daily pinta ...

I remember the cheery milkman, that figure in cap and apron, who used to deliver our pintas whatever the weather, every day apart from a Sunday. I remember the clatter of the crates jumping up a foot in the air as the milkfloat drove over rough ground. I remember Mum stuffing an envelope of cash into an empty silver top bottle to be collected on a Saturday. I remember blue tits pecking off the tops if left outside for too long. Have you any memories of your milkman from your childhood?

If my memory serves me right we used to have six pints of milk delivered some days, what did we do, bath in it! Looking back though Mum used to make a lot of puddings, rice pudding, custards and blancmanges, and remember junket? Dad would have Weetabix mushed up in milk every morning for his breakfast, usually bagging the cream from the top of the milk, yuk!

On our recent trip to Middle Farm we discovered in the milking shed, a huge collection of the old advertising milk bottles from the 1970s, remember these. I was in my element going up and down the rows, saying remember this, remember that. It doesn't take much to make my day!

Remember the Humphrey straws you could buy containing milkshake powder which you mixed into milk? That would be the only way to get me to drink cold milk. Remember the milkman leaving free Humphrey stickers? Sticking them to anything and everything in sight!

Remember Farmer's Wife, a small range of essentials you could get off the milkman? Please click on the link for a reminder from Ernie the milkman! Remember the Dairy Diary mums used to put an order in for every year. They have been published for well over 25 years now and you can still buy them today!

What a service one man and his battery-operated milkfloat could deliver. Only one household in our close still has a milkman, do you?

My milkman is called Terry and I bless him frequently. Not only does he deliver milk, cheese, eggs and kitchen paper to me, I also have occasional special offers and the diaries. The do a whole range of other stuff and there is a website you can place a regular or one-off order on. It's a tad more expensive than the shops but I really appreciate this personal service so am prepared to pay extra for it.

... and not only a battery operated cart, when I was little the village milkman had a tricycle milk cart. And My Uncle delivered milk around the wilds of Norfolk in a van - bouncing over the warped concrete tracks to isolated houses - the fastest milkman in the east!

Have you seen this? http://www.threemeninafloat.com/Welcome.html

I love the Humphrey's bottle..I wonder who the illustrator is..looks familiar! I can only just remember my grandmother getting her milk in bottles with silver foil type lids, but only remember cartons at home.. and I couldn't stand rice pudding but used to make it for my own 2 when they were little. :)
Hope you are having a lovely week so far Gx

I don't remember there ever being milkmen in the States in my lifetime, but my uncle ran a large dairy farm and it was a privilege to be hidden quietly in the barn at milking time (so as not to spook the cows) when I was little. This all sounds so British, which is really cool! We in the States are celebrating the 4th, which is probably something you don't do, eh?

Once some one stoll the milk mans money, aster that I think we had to change the way we paid him. I don't think we drick enough milk now to have the milk man but he calls next door.
I have been talking to K about having a Micro Mini real live cow in the back garden but I just don't think they exist. Freash milk would be so nice.

Thanks for still visiting my blog. I'm back now... hopefully just doing the next post, might finish it tomorrow.

Glad you liked the cr video, it was my first atempt, now I know it works I will give it another go. He is feeling much better thank you. The game keeper has started to put his baby pheasents out so hopefully any fox who values his little socks will stay away from the village and cr.

I still need to catch up on everyones blogs, relised I subscribe in yahoo mail. It was all taking too much time!!! Enjoyable time.

No sadly I don't have a milkman although there is still one available. I just can't cope with the idea of 3 dogs barking at the milkman at 6 in the morning!
I adored our milkman when I was a kid his name was Dick and he was so kind.
As for 6 pints, my husband is always amazed when I come home with 36 pints at the weekend and it's all gone by Tuesday morning!

Oh, yes. Even here in USA we hadd milkmen. Ours was from Lehigh Dairy and he also delivered butter and even sweet buns. He came every other day, I think, but no more. Here everyone now goes to the WAWA. I'd love to have a milkman!

I remember the Humphrey campaign! Watch out, watch out, watch out, watch out there's a Humphrey about! My Nan used to buy me the Dairy Diary every year and the Dairy recipe book. My mum used to have the milk delivered. I think we had silver top milk but our neighbour Mrs George had milk in skinny bottles which my mum told me had been sterilised!

Great memories ~ although I can't remember the milkman delivering in England, I can certainly remember the bakery man coming around...with little tiny hovis loaves, and chocolate cups filled wish something tasty. I used to slice my little hovis loaf, and spread it with butter and marmalade! When we moved to Canada, we lived on the prairies and had milk delivery by a milkman in a wagon pulled by 2 horses...I must look out the photo. :) Thanks for jogging the memory...(whoops, I just thought of jugging the mammary...LOL)

We had a little metal box on the front porch, and the milkman would come by very early three times a week and leave milk and eggs and butter, too, if my Mom ordered it. I remember the milk would be half frozen in the winter!

PS ~ Somebody told me that someone told them...that you see a cow every day. When I came home, I thought to myself, I never saw a cow today...and then I looked at your blog entry! LOL

OOOh this was a lovely memory jogger for me too Louise..
I had a large collection of these advertising milk bottles once upon a time.. prompted by my shrewd mother to collect advertising items at the time.
Have I still got them? Alas no..

Your milkman post brought back so many memories. I don't think we have milkmen here in Adelaide any more. When my husband and I were courting he worked weekends as a milky. It was so much fun to go delivering with him. I always made sure he had a spare chocolate milk for me! It's strange that we think we are so advanced these days, but have lost so many services. I'm off to the supermarket every few days to buy nine litres of milk for my starving children. No wonder we all 'need' a car!

I don't remember the Humphrey thing at all, don't know why. As a child we used to have a third pint bottle of milk at school every morning. In the summer it was warm from having been left in the sun and smelt horrible. In the winter it would freeze and push the silver top up about two inches. We had to drink it all, there was never any question of leaving it or throwing it away!

I haven't heard of Humphrey. :/
We had a milkman though.. and a pop man!

This entry brings back lots of memories!
There are still a few milkmen doing their rounds hereabouts. You never know they may just come back into fashion again so to speak! xx

Thanks for evoking so many wonderful memories. I could remember perfectly the get and glow ad for ready brek. We had a milkman right up until we left the UK in 2005, we just had a pint a day but I really loved knowing it would be there on the step. Sadly they don't do milkmen in NZ.

I am really lucky I still have doorstep deliveries. I know if I have nothing else in after not being able to face the supermarket I will have milk for tea in the morning. It supports a local business and its great at Xmas - I can order extra milk, juice, potatoes, cream and I know thats something I don't have to remember.

I albsolutely remember all of that! I remember the milk man coming down my grandmother's street in a horse drawn cart. Those really were the good old days. Happy fourth of July!

Yes, we still have a milkman. Our family guzzles huge amounts of milk every week - it's my daughter's favourite drink so we go through about 10 litres a week!

I remember our milkman, and that wonderful leather bag he put the money in. And the fact that it was nearly always outside our house that he chose to rearrange the empty crates on the back of his float. Humphrey came when I was at least well into my teens but I remember the ads. It's reminded me of the egg adverts with 'Aunt Et'. Do you remember those?

Don't forget the Nesquik :) About the only way I'd drink milk from memory!

I remember that our milkman would break off bits of ice for us to suck on. He was so friendly too. The other day I swa a milk truck in our neighborhood. I didn't know that they were still in operation but someone in our neighborhood gets milk delivered!
Thanks for the memories.
Hugs, Rhondi
