midsummer eve ...

A beautiful painting entitled Midsummer Eve by Edward Robert Hughes c1908

Although the solstice is traditionally known as 'midsummer', we often think of it as the first 'official' day of summer. There is a certain irony to this, as after the solstice the days begin to get shorter. In a sense, the solstice is the beginning of the end of summer!

oh I love this painting!
I can't believe we are at midsummers eve already I always associate the start of summer with the end of school! Lets hope we get a 'proper' summer this year..none of that horrid rain please!

oh and by the way ..there are a few books written by the aunt who lived in that house on my blog all about my great grandpa and his little dog,Jerry..I've even found them on Amazon.co.uk!

I get melancholy around this time. The days start to grow shorter, albeit slowly and summer never seems to come!

Ooooooo I have a huge copy of this beautiful painting at the bottom of my bed, the first thing I see when I wake in the morning, the second is usually Twiglet shouting HELLO MUMMY !!!

Such an enchanting painting! The light is so warm and radiant.

We only have two types of weather in Texas: hot and hotter. It is hotter right now.

Thank you for sharing such beauty!

I love this painting. Such a shame that we've had such grey evenings when the days have been so long! Enjoy your weekend

So true, Louise! I often wondered about that myself.
That is why at Newgrange in Ireland the ancient ones celebrated the Winter solstice --they were smart enough to know it meant the days would be getting longer.

Lovely painting!

Looking forward to your unusual facts about yourself tag!

Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks for the reminder. We've gone through one of those big Marmites in about two weeks - so they won't last long at all!

Hi Louise, it's a bit worrying to think we've reached midsummer already, it really seems like it January 5 minutes ago! Yes, I still bought quite a bit of stuff, I have to go into this self-restraint gradually so it's not too much of a shock to the system. Mr. Bloom bought a few CDs and a book I think - luckily he's aggreable to going into the charity shops as he heads for the book and CD section. I do ask him if he'd like to choose something else to do, but he never does - he's a sweetie!
Have a lovely weekend,
Lucy x

The beginning of the end of summer? That is a sad thought! Although I do love the painting. Doesn't the time fly?

It's a gorgeous painting isn't it?

It's a good thing it is midsummer as yesterday we no electricity for 12 hours! It was caused by the high winds bringing down a power cable. At least it wasn't dark....the electricity only came back on at 2.30am this morning!
