a happy anniversary ...

Yesterday October 1st, myself and J celebrated clocking up 25 years together. I am sure most of you by now have realised we have neglected to tie the knot, but be assured we are very much as Darby and Joan as any married couple out there!

We met back in 1983, whilst on separate nights out at what was then known as the Top Rank Suite in Brighton. During the evening my friend Fiona and I were getting some unwelcome attention, and feeling uneasy with the whole situation we decided to walk up to J and his friend, and asked them both to pretend they were our fellas! Well basically that was it, and at the end of the evening we arranged to meet up the next evening for a drink at my local pub The Spotted Cow in Angmering, and from then on we continued to see each other or phone every day.

Our lives pretty much carried on as normal until 1985 when J was involved in a near fatal motorbike accident, which left him on a life support for a week, followed by many months of rehabilitation. This was a turning point in both our lives, and in 1986 we signed on the dotted line for a mortgage and bought our first place together, a brand new flat close to the sea, which was to become our home for the following 12 years.

We both wonder where the time has gone, but look forward to the next 25 years together!

The rose above is a hybrid tea called Silver Anniversary.

We too have never tied any knots and have clocked up a year more than you two.... and we don't know one couple whose weddings we attended over all those years that are still together.....maybe it's a good thing we didn't tie anything. We are still enjoying our time together because we really want to....
Happy Anniversary!

25 years! How fabulous. Its strange how something so frightening helps you take stock of what you have and who you have in your life. Thank you for sharing it. My hubby and I met in a pub, the first words I ever said to him where " Phwoar! You're a bit of alright!" Thankfully it was enough and didn't send him running to the hills! :o) Congrats to you and J! xx

Hi Louise

I'm new to blogging and am loving my experience so far!

Congratulations on your anniversary, I hope I sound as happy as you when I get to 25years with my James. What also really struck me about your blog is that you mentioned The Spotted Cow in Angmering....as a child my family and I along with lots of friends used to go camping in Angmering on a large farm where we used to walk to The Spotted Cow most nights....very enjoyable memories, thank you for reminding me.

Happy 25 years together to you. My husband and I just "lived together" for 17 years before we officially tied the knot (here in my country you are not recognized as an official inheritor unless you have a marriage license? and we have now been together 30 years. I agree with you about the weddings and those that are NOT still together. A piece of paper doesn't make you married..the committment does Enjoy your Blog

What an interesting story.
I usually go to your garden blog but see you are having a little hiatus from it........
hope your partner recovered fully from his motorcycle accident? Very traumatic and upsetting.
R. had a horrible bike crash in '95 and feels the effects to this day.
Greetings from New York.
ps I was at Sussex University a million years ago.
